Wardriving//Borrowing Internet Access (not asking for it)

Mabey ill make this part of a series? Let me know if I should.

The act of searching for wireless networks by a person in a moving vehicle using a wifi equipped computer such as a laptop or PDA.
-Wikipedia

Necessary tools.
-Laptop with wireless internet. You can pick up a nice PDA to help but i just roll with a laptop.
Netstumbler is a good program, If your running Vista try Inssider. For Mac I like iStumbler, Kismet is good for Linux.
-A Car
-This Shirt might help No one will be impressed.

__Act Natural, Dont get caught

if you pick up a network, you need to ask yourself a few things.

Am I driving around slowly, right next to the curb, and stopping periodically at every house that I see?
Not only is this uncool and generally not laid-back, but its a fact that every neighborhood has someone like Dwight from the office. What I'm saying is that theirs always that one guy who sees someone suspicious and calls the cops (we know this guy has the cops on speed-dial). The point is, DON'T DO THIS. Theres no reason why you should have to. Make multiple trips down the street at slightly under the speed limit, keeping mental notes on what you see. this way, someone might just assume that you are lost and not give it a second thought.

Can they see me from their windows?
When you are at the point in your journey where you are ready to stop, make sure to position your car in such a way that there is a bush or any other obstacle between the house and your car. If they realize that you are using thier wireless, they may look out the window to see if there is anything out there. If they fail to see you, chances are they're not going to leave thier house. You have found the perfect spot.

Will I be able to be traced with my MAC address?
Why dont you use a program like MadMACs or Macmakeup to change it every once in a while. This is really just a redundancy but it might (probably not though) mean the difference between staying undetected and getting caught.

Am I using my name On anything they might see?
I;m talking about anything in your shared folder, maybe the "name" of your computer, etc. Make sure nothings visible.

-Note: I have found that if you download the drivers of their printer and attempt to print something, your username actually shows up on the printer queue list. This can be avoided by changing your login name. Someone probably knows a more technical way to hide it but this way is pretty simple.

__Instinct

You are driving around and you are suddenly presented with two choices. Choice "A" is a small quaint area with several houses where families and older people live. The houses are pretty spaced out and they look slightly aged. Choice "B" includes a apartment complex but not the sketchy kind. Which one will it be? If you had the "instinct" or if you had any common sense at all, you would have chosen the apartment complex. These babies are highly populated with all kinds of people, but mainly those who are in their early 20's, high tech, and they probably all have thier own wifi of some kind. park in the lot and immediately pick up around 15 "usable networks." There are several other places where this phenomenon occurs. If you know what to look for, you can always find good WIFI.

__Excuse Making.

Chances are that about one in every 1000 people who does these things will be questioned. Since there's still a chance, it might be a good idea to have an excuse ready. if you have a good one, email me one at davidjbryant@comcast.net and ill put them up on a later blog (this is assuming that anyone actually reads this).

Since im in such a helpful mood, Ill wrap this up by giving some helpful advice to all you parents
